A risk assessment is a process utilized to identify and evaluate the characteristics of a known infectious or potentially infectious agent or material, the activities that may result in exposure, the probability of contracting a laboratory-acquired infection, and the potential consequences of such an infection. The information obtained from the risk assessment serves as a guide for selecting appropriate practices and facility requirements to minimize or eliminate the risk to the lab worker, the community, and the environment.
